Coffee

Malawi coffee is smooth, a little earthy, and pleasantly roasty.
The Malawian coffees have got flowery and lime-like overtones. The coffees are meticulously processed and graded, using internationally approved standards and quality control measures, to provide a high quality offering.
Relatively unknown, Malawi coffee as of recent times made extensive developments in quality control, throughout from coffee producing (from harvest to green bean), in the brewing and cupping thereof and finally in packaging and marketing. This revolution has resulted in the emergence of an exciting, fresh, flavourful cup that can be compared with the finest of East African Coffees.

Apart from the health benefits to the consumer, coffee has been one of the important export commodities, bringing forex to Malawi.
Coffee has been a source of income to smallholder farmers.
Role and Status in Malawi Export:
Contributed 0.3 percent of the Malawi total exports in 2013
The exported value of coffee in 2013 was 3, 985,000 USD

The crop favours the highlands of shire in the district of Thyolo, Mulanje and Zomba and the northern highlands of Nkhatabay, misuku hills, phoka hills, viphya north area and south east of Mzimba area with annual rainfall range of 2000mm to 1500mm.
The temperature growing range is 21.9 0C and 70 C. The growing altitude is 900m to 3000m.
Production and Supply Capacity
Coffee production quantities have had cyclic trend with high volumes in 2009 of 5510MT and 4150 MT in 2011 and registered the highest in 2013 of 5684 MT.
Coffee grown areas remain relatively small and produced by a limited number of producers. The trade in for producing coffee rather than maize and other crops has been the main factor contributing to low volumes of coffee being produced.
Malawi has got capacity to produce more coffee and increase its supply capacity.
