The Malawi Investment and Trade Centre (MITC), in partnership with the High Commission of Uganda in Dar es Salaam, proudly co-hosted the 1st Malawi–Uganda Business Forum and Exhibition under the theme “Exploring and Tapping into the Rich Opportunities for Deeper Collaboration.”

The landmark event brought together senior government officials, business leaders, investors, and exporters from both nations, creating a dynamic platform for dialogue, knowledge exchange, and partnership building.

The Forum showcased key trade and investment prospects across Malawi and Uganda, with discussions centered on agriculture, energy, tourism, manufacturing, industrialization, and mineral value addition. Delegates explored ways to overcome persistent challenges such as trade barriers and logistics constraints, while identifying new avenues for joint ventures and cross-border collaboration.

The meeting was graced by H.E. Col. (Rtd.) Fred Mwesigye, High Commissioner of Uganda, alongside senior representatives from the Ministry of Trade and Industry, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, and leaders from the private sector. Their presence underscored the strong political will and commitment to advancing economic integration between the two countries.

A major highlight of the Forum was the launch of Malawian Airlines’ new scheduled flights to Uganda, now operating four times weekly. This milestone opens fresh opportunities for trade, tourism, and business mobility, strengthening the bridge between the two nations and enhancing regional connectivity.

In his remarks, H.E. Col. (Rtd.) Mwesigye emphasized the importance of partnership and mutual benefit, highlighting the critical role of airlines, logistics firms, and financial institutions in enabling seamless trade and investment. The Director of Administration from the Ministry of Trade reaffirmed Uganda’s dedication to expanding cooperation and unlocking new economic prospects.

The Forum also underscored the need to formalize trade relations through a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) and to establish new trade corridors that will sustain long-term collaboration.

This inaugural gathering marks a significant step toward stronger commercial ties and a shared vision of prosperity between Malawi and Uganda. With renewed commitment from both governments and private sector leaders, the Forum sets the stage for a future of deeper integration, innovation, and inclusive growth.
