The Malawi Investment and Trade Centre (MITC) successfully led a Trade Mission to Luanda, Angola, from 9 to 10 March 2026, aimed at expanding market access for Malawian products within one of Africa’s emerging and largely untapped markets.

The mission formed part of MITC’s broader strategy to diversify export destinations and strengthen Malawi’s participation in regional value chains under the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA).

As part of the engagement, the delegation conducted targeted market intelligence activities across major retail outlets in Luanda, gaining first-hand insights into consumer demand patterns, product preferences, and supply chain dynamics. This market-driven approach enabled the identification of key distribution channels and strategic import partners, including MAFCOM, one of Angola’s leading fast-moving consumer goods (FMCG) distributors with nationwide reach.

A series of high-level engagements were also held with the Angola Agency for Private Investment and Promotion of Exports (AIPEX). Both parties agreed to strengthen cooperation in trade promotion, business-to-business (B2B) matchmaking, and reciprocal trade missions. AIPEX expressed strong interest in formalizing collaboration through a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) and confirmed its participation in the upcoming Malawi Trade Global Expo 2026.

The mission further facilitated targeted B2B engagements between Malawian and Angolan private sector actors, including discussions between Kelfoods and BrasAfrica, which opened potential investment and supply opportunities within the poultry value chain, particularly in day-old chicks and animal feed products.

A key outcome of the mission was a strategic engagement with MAFCOM Angola, which expressed strong interest in sourcing a range of Malawian products, including Kilombero rice, soya beans, groundnuts, sugar beans, macadamia nuts, tea, coffee, and fish products. This interest signals strong potential for structured export agreements and long-term trade partnerships.

The mission demonstrated the value of proactive market exploration combined with structured business matchmaking in unlocking new export opportunities for Malawian enterprises.

Through such initiatives, MITC continues to position Malawi as a competitive and reliable export source, while actively facilitating partnerships that translate into tangible trade outcomes and support economic diversification.

This engagement reinforces Malawi’s commitment to expanding its footprint within African markets and strengthening its export base under the AfCFTA framework.
