Development of Industrial Hemp regulations is set to start this December as it awaits Cabinet approval, the Malawi Investment and Trade Centre has said.
Speaking at the inaugural Malawi Investment reception hosted by the Malawi UK Business Group in London on Monday evening, MITC Director of Investment Promotion and Facilitation, Mr. Joshua Nthakomwa said Malawi is set to roll out industrial hemp and medicinal cannabis programmes at different levels.

He said “The Special Crops Act is already in place, what we need now are regulations to govern the growing of industrial hemp and licencing to start as soon as government gives necessary approval to regulations.

“there will be controls on who and how one can grow industrial hemp, basically through green houses.”

Nthakomwa said for the two sectors, controls will extend to include local processing of the plants as no raw hemp or cannabis will be exported to ensure that Malawi gains maximum benefits from the crops.

“We have registered huge interests from companies in Canada, Israel and other places.  We look forward to many more investors coming, not only in this sector, but many other sectors as well,” he said.

Patron of the Malawi UK Business Group, Mohan Kaul, said the group had proven to be one of the best platforms to expose Malawi’s hidden opportunities and linking with potential investors.

“We hope that businesses here will find it helpful to know where they can get support,” he said.
